IN-CHARACTER:
Character name:Ryan Kinkade
Character journal: [personal profile] vloggingspace
Series name: Voltron: Legendary Defender
Canon notes: Kinkade will be from the end of season 7, following the Galra occupation of Earth.

Species: Human

History: Years following the Kerberos mission, an original member of that mission, Sam Holt came crashing back to Earth and brought with him the story of an overwhelming military force--the Galra Empire. While Sam insisted that Earth must be warned and that preparations needed to be made, he is kept from revealing the truth by order of Admiral Sanda. Instead, he tasks himself with preparing his Garrison base by working with the top cadets, of which Kinkade is one. This preparation includes upgrading Garrison tech and training the cadets to fly new fighters equipt to deal with the alien threat.

Barely a year following Sam's initial concerns about a Galran threat, his fear is realized and Sendak's forces bare down on Earth. Before long, the Garrison is the last outpost and Earth's only hope to hold out against the Galra. During this occupation, Kinkade and the rest of the cadets are left to run security, maintain the Garrison's position, and make covert supply runs to that the operation can keep going. Kinkade reveals himself to be part of the backbone of the cadet team, keeping himself grounded and covering others as a sniper. He prefers to observe, making commentary only when necessary. This is especially true following the apparent loss of Veronica on a mission, in which he states that without her sacrifice the mission wouldn't have succeeded and they wouldn't have made it out alive. It's a pragmatic statement, but it's all he can do to try and keep the team focused.

Of course, life is too simple with just one source of conflict. Following what is assumed to be a couple of years of Galra occupation (time in this series is weirder than a season of Doctor Who), the Paladins of Voltron come to Earth--and immediately trigger Galra patrol and defenses. These triggers gain the attention of the MFE pilot cadets, causing them to recover the Paladins and return them to the Garrison. The fact that the Paladins, particularly Keith, seem to be very "go-go-go" on facing the Galra causes them to butt heads with the MFE pilots, particularly James, over their lack of understanding of Earth's current standing within the conflict. Ultimately, however, they have to come together to infiltrate a Galra detention center for information. This infiltration mission has Kinkade working closely with Lance as part of the sniper team, and he comes to earn a level of respect for the Paladins and their tech as Lance takes the opportunity to speak to and connect with him. This is one of the first instances that Kinkade reaches out, questioning instead of simply observing.
